John 1:17: “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”   1 comment

The law defined sin, but the law could not save. Salvation was supplied by the grace of God. Law and grace cant be separated. Dan Delzell, in the Christian post, wrote: “Notice that the contrast is not between grace and truth. It is between the Law of the Old Testament and the Gospel of the [...]

I Cor 1:23: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greek foolishness   Leave a comment

Blinded by unbelief, the Jew has been stumbling over the cross since Christ rose. The cross, however, lies right in their path and they cannot get out of its way. The Greek philosophers sought after wisdom but deliberately passed by the wisdom of God which was actually foolishness.

Phil 2:5: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus   Leave a comment

No man will ever get into the Kingdom arrogantly. the mind of Christ was characterized by humility (vs 6 & 8), dependence upon God (John 5:19, 30), a determination to do the Fathers will (John 5:30; 6:38), thoughtfulness of others (Acts 10:38), and a willingness to sacrifice and suffer, and even to die, for the [...]

Acts 16:31: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved   Leave a comment

A man once wished to join a certain church, but said he could not do so on account of the views the church holds on the subject of “election.” The minister to whom he was sent for help and enlightenment, failed to make the matter clear, and a layman came to the rescue, and said: [...]

Romans 6:3: Know ye not. that so many of us were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?   Leave a comment

Baptism is a gospel ordinance commemorating the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. In baptism public testimony is given to the effect that the one baptized has been crucified with Christ, buried with Him, and is raised with Him to walk in newness of life.

I Tim 2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”   Leave a comment

Your pastor, your church, etc are NOT the “one” mediator. “The Scriptures should be read with the aim of finding Christ in them. Whoever turns aside from this object, even though he wears himself out all his life in learning, he will never reach the knowledge of the truth.” – John Calvin

Eph 1:1-2: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.   Leave a comment

In many of Paul’s letters, he introduced himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ (see also, 1 Corinthians 1:1; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:1; Colossians 1:1; 1 Timothy 1:1; 2 Timothy 1:1; Titus 1:1). This, then is the very heart, the very core of what constitutes an “apostle.” Total voluntary submission to the will of [...]

Rom 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”   Leave a comment

Adam’s death caused the death of his descendants; Christ’s resurrection guarantees that of His people. Christ came to restore what was ruined in Adam’s fall, hence Christ’s work produces the opposite effect of Adam’s.

Col 1:2: To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father   Leave a comment

This letter was written to a specific audience: the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ and in this case the ones in Colossae. Not to the world.

Eph 5:22-33:   Leave a comment

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in [...]

Rev 1:9: I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.   Leave a comment

The only brotherhood of which the Bible speaks is the brotherhood of believers. God is the creator and maker of all men and in that sense all men are His offspring, but God is Father only to those who believe. Patmos was a lonely isle in the Aegean Sea. It was about 30 miles in [...]

Rom 5:8: But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.   Leave a comment

To a certain point the love of God to angels and men is identical and coincidental, but beyond that point it may be said, so far as men are concerned, it diverges into grace and mercy. That is to say, grace and mercy are terms not applicable to angels, but to sinful men. Grace always [...]

Phil 1: 20: I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.   1 comment

Paul was not certain whether he would live or die….that didn’t matter. Christ would be exalted. My determination is to be the utmost for HIS Highest. And that has to mean whether that would be life or death. To the Christian, death will lead to life for his or herself. But sometimes a death can [...]

Phil 1:6: being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.   Leave a comment

This is an Equation for Today!: It (A) defines the confidence and security that should be at the core of every believers life. Add this with (B) Romans 8:38-39: “I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor [...]

Phil 1:2: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.   Leave a comment

When Paul put together the words “Grace” and “peace” (charis and eirenehe was stating something great. He was taking the normal greeting of two great nations and molding them into one. Charis is the greeting with which Greek letters always began and eirene teh greeting with which Jews met each other.

I Cor 1:10: Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you: but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment   Leave a comment

Paul was telling the brothers and sisters of the church to stop arguing about the factions and divisions that were arising. To be perfectly united does not mean Paul required everyone to be exactly the same. Instead, he wanted them to set aside their arguments and focus on what truly mattered: Jesus Christ. The word [...]

I Thess 1:1: Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you.   Leave a comment

This is unique of the thirteen letters attributed to Paul, in that he does not introduce himself as apostle, servant, or prisoner. He refers to himself simply as Paul. The inclusion of Sylvanus and Timothy suggest that maybe they had a part in the writing of the letter.
