Once they saw, they understood. The sound of the mockingbird is beautiful at 2PM. It is raucus noise at 2AM. Yet the song is the same. At two in the morning I don’t want to hear it. I want to sleep. I wonder how many other things I see, hear, and dont understand, yet want [...]

Luke 22: 44: And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.   Leave a comment

Luke is the only gospel writer to mention the bloody sweat, possibly because of his interest as a physician. Sweating blood is a rare psychological phenomenon.

Luke 23:5: But they kept insisting, “He is stirring up the people with what he teaches all over Judea, from where he started in Galilee to this place.”   Leave a comment

This has forever been a favorite accusation of truth against the work of true reformers. The Romans at this very time had a law forbidding the teaching of any new religion “whereby the minds of men may be disturbed,

Jesus was saying, in essense, “If you try and evangelize in your own strength, you’ll fall on your face in a short time. You can’t do anything for me unless you’re full of the Holy Ghost.

Under the third plague in Egypt–that of turning the dust into lice–the magicians, failing to duplicate it, said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” (Ex 8:18-19)

Luke 2:44-45: But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.   Leave a comment

This is how many lose Jesus today. They suppose He is in their company, but do not see to it that He is with them personally. Through carelessness it takes but a day to lose Him; but when once lost it sometimes takes days of sorrowful searching, as did Joseph and Mary, to find Him [...]

Luke 2: 8-10: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.   Leave a comment

Shepherding is one of the oldest professions in the world. Adam was charged to have dominion over the animal kingdom (Genesis 1:26), and Abel is called a “keeper of the sheep” (Genesis 4:2). Throughout biblical history, significant men were experienced shepherds—Jacob and his sons, Moses, and David. Shepherding is also a prominent theme in Scripture. [...]

Luke 6:42: Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.   Leave a comment

Most of us live by a double standard. We judge ourselves one way, but set up another set of rules for others. When we sin, we are quick to explain our reasons behind our disobedience: “I was exhausted, I didn’t know what I was doing, I was under a lot of stress”, etc. We feel [...]

Luke 1:76-78: And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven   Leave a comment

A prophet is utilized by God to prepare the way. To prepare the way for the word of God that is about to come forth which will produce guaranteed fruit and not return void. The Hebrew word for a prophet, navi (Nun-Beit-Yod-Alef) comes from the term niv sefatayim meaning “fruit of the lips,” which emphasizes [...]

Luke 1:68-70: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),”   Leave a comment

There are several references in the OT to the horns of the alter. Joab took hold of the horns of the alter when he was about to be excuted. The horns were “ram’s-horn” like places where the sacrifices were tied down – however they also served as places where one could grasp and hold. The [...]

Luke 1:46- 49 ” And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.”   Leave a comment

A time for everything is what the 3rd chapter of Ecclesiates speaks of “Mary,” who has chosen to give God praise for what he has done in her life. What does trouble have to do with this? It was time to give God the glory. Mary didn’t think that she could conceive and she was [...]

Luke 18:6-8: And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? “I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”   Leave a comment

Now if this unrighteous judge with no morals can answer a repetitive request, then how much more can a loving God? If this man will answer petitions that come to him from a stranger once a day, then will not God answer petitions that come from his children both day and night? Will God be [...]

Luke 9:20: But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”   Leave a comment

The important question here is “who do YOU say that I am?” Often when asked the question about who Jesus is we may do as Peter and say, well, “The Bible says He was this or that,” or, “my pastor says he is this or that,” etc etc etc. This is why Jesus had to [...]
